Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) refers to AI systems that have the ability to understand, learn, and apply intelligence across a wide range of tasks, mimicking human cognitive abilities. Julian Togelius explores “open-ended learning“—the ability of AI to continuously learn from its environment without predefined tasks and evolve and improve without direct human input. For AI to achieve “general intelligence”, it must be capable of not just solving known problems, but also generating new ideas and solutions—an attribute associated with human creativity. He also stresses the importance of building “safe and interpretable AI”- systems not only perform their tasks effectively but also do so in ways that are understandable to humans and ensure that their behaviors align with ethical and safety standards.
