Alexis de Tocqueville noted American democracy is rooted in the principle of “equality”, which allows for broad political participation. The “rule of law” plays a crucial role in maintaining democratic stability. Democratic societies encourage individualism, which, if unchecked, could also weaken civic engagement and social cohesion. Democracy naturally pushes societies toward “greater equality”, but excessive equality can threaten freedom by making citizens more dependent on the state. He recognized that economic freedom does not always align with political democracy, as capitalism can lead to wealth inequality, creating new challenges for democratic governance.
