Anne Applebaum argues that some people are drawn to authoritarian systems not despite their oppressive nature but because of them. Authoritarianism offers simplicity, certainty, and a sense of belonging—an antidote to the messiness and compromises of pluralistic democracy. Many of today’s illiberal movements, she suggests, are driven by nostalgia for an imagined, orderly past. Nationalist movements claim to restore a country to greatness by rejecting diversity, liberalism, and globalism.
