Stephen Cave identifies four primary “immortality narratives” that have shaped human culture and behavior: 1)“Staying Alive”: The pursuit of physical longevity through means such as elixirs, diets, and modern medical advancements aimed at extending life indefinitely:2) “Resurrection”: The belief in being brought back to life after death;3)“Soul”: The concept of an eternal, non-physical essence that survives bodily death:4)“Legacy”: Achieving immortality through lasting achievements, fame, or contributions that endure beyond one’s lifetime. He also critically assesses the feasibility and desirability of these paths to immortality in the context of contemporary science and philosophy. For example, how endless life could lead to existential boredom, stagnation, and strain on resources, potentially diminishing life’s quality and meaning. Even the most renowned achievements may eventually fade from collective memory. He encourages us to consider whether the pursuit of immortality in any form detracts from appreciating the impermanence and unique value of the life we currently experience.
